Colorful Childhood

This is strange. It seems like everytime I make a post about Jem or my childhood it's the month of April. Maybe because it's spring and I think of new beginnings. Or maybe all the colorful easter eggs and bunnies make me think of Jem. My previous post on Jem was here and here, both in April, different year.  Anyhow, I'm still waiting on a Jem movie to come out. Would I love to work on that movie set. She's an icon of my childhood years and I can bet on my right hand that Betsey Johnson had some inspiration from Jem. Check out those rose leggings, thats so BJ, but first there was Jem.

 There was Rainbow Bright and Lisa Frank who shaped my colorful world to what it is today. What a boring childhood I would of had if it wasn't for them. But thank GOD they were around because it was all truly outrageous! oxoxooxox

Colorful Childhood!

 As far back as I can remember, I've always loved color. When I was a little girl my teacher gave us an assignment; to pick someone we wanted to be like when we grew up. I picked Rainbow Bright. "That is not a real person, pick someone else". Pick someone else?....I thought, but who esle would I want to be like? I thought the teacher was crazy and to much of "an adult" to even come close in understanding.

 My alias was "Rainbow". I sent out for magazines in that name and signed letters, notes as Rainbow. I hoped to some day change my name legally to Rainbow, but I knew my mom would not be happy considering she did name me Jessica.

Then I was introduced to Lisa Franks, a world full of painting panda's, ballerina bunnies and magical unicorns. I had stickers, trapper keepers, pencils, notebooks and even PJ's with Lisa Franks loveable characters. But of course my heart always turned to Rainbow. Fast forward a few months...la la la la..and there she comes , some strange girl named Jerrica who by the touch of her star earring creates holographic wonder and turns into JEM. Holy pink hair and high heels, I wanted to be her too. I would go into my mom's closet and wear her heels and even played with her favorite lipsticks. And yes I did get in trouble, but it was worth it; because for a moment I was fabulous. I will admit, the misfits did have the better outfits. They had the fish net leggings, ripped off shoulder tops, leather, zebra prints, two toned tights, they were just badass all the way. So my love of color and fashion started back when I was just a tiny little girl and it never left me. I can think back to any memory of my childhood and there was always one of these colorful worlds surrounding me no matter what.

Sadly  I am an adult now, and still all these things bring joy to me. I will always love Rainbow, Jem and Lisa Franks. Who was your childhood inspiration?

Lately i have been thinking of my childhood. I seriously believe what we loved back then shaped us to who we are today. This is why i say this. I love candy, colors, cupcakes, unicorn, bunnies and all things sparkly. Sometimes i wonder why i love these things so much. Looking at photo's of me being five or six i had on some PJ's with two bears hanging on to a lollipop. Then i went through my junk box and found some awesome Lisa Frank stickers...awwwww memory lane. I had all that stuff and even joined her membership club *sniff*

Lisa Frank, incase you don't know her, she was very popular in the 80's and early 90's. She create a world full of unicorns, rainbows, floating candy and sparkly flowers with glitter and hologram butterflies. Then i found one of my folders with two unicorns and a big rainbow. Finally it hit me, that even as a child i loved these things. The things i truly love are really ME.
I remember looking at her artwork and daydreaming for hours, especially at school where i was picked on for my style of clothing. Lisa Frank was my escape even if it was for a little while. It may sound cheesey, but i give her all the credit for me being such a sucker for all things magical, colorful and sparkly, and OMG let's not forget the trapper keepers.

Frank is still around, still creating school supplies for future generations and recently teamed up with Ed Hardy to create some awesome notebooks.
